I have finally got some fitness back after extended time out of the saddle, and ventured my former regular training ride home, which goes through Forge Valley. Just above the Old Man's Mouth, the road is a narrow 2 lanes, with a set of blind corners as it climbs out of the valley bottom. As I was climbing up the initial kick, I heard a car slow down behind me. He started to rev, to pass, just as I saw a car coming on from ahead. I put my arm out to caution him, and he held back. As I cleared the corners onto the short straight, seeing the road clear I waved him past. As he sped past, the gentleman driving wound down his window and gave me a thumbs up, That's lovely, nice to be appreciated. Then the white van behind him flashed his lights to say thank you! To top it off the 6 cars backed up behind the van, all cleared me, with plenty of room. Not a 4 letter word, honk of horn or obscene gesture in sight. That's eight polite drivers and 2 positive gentlemen, one in a white van.

How different to my usual experiences, and I'm happy to report a nice incident to offset the usual negativity.

Pickle me now, I've seen everything.

Same happened to be on the road to Rhossilli on gower this Sunday.

However a few miles later a BMW estate with a fish glued to the back cut both me and the girlfriend up so normal service was resumed.

  • there are considerate drivers out there that dont get noticed

i was in the Purbecks last sunday, and on the descent from Kingston, caught up a Land Rover that had passed me just before. The driver must have been alert to see me in his rear view as well as keep an eye on was is a pretty twisty and steep road. He pulled over as i caught him up and waved me through.

Waiting together at the bottom junction into Corfe, i gave him a thumbs up, when his wife wound down the window and commented on how many bikes use that hill, in a friendly manner. I guess they must be used to bikes, seems drivers keep a constant eye out for us down here.

Just my own recent encounter with a nice couple who were prepared to let a bike past. Seems a rare occurrence

do you mean the 'born again christian' fish..?? If so, they are some of the worst drivers - I think they rely on God's help to guide them on the road - but God is obviously busy doing something else.....

  • I believe in God but only when going downhill. However, divine intervention doesn't seem to work on the way up though, and everything seems to go a lot slower so I'm an uphill atheist.
