I have just bought an 11-28 cassette (SRAM) and I am going to be using it with a 9 speed triple RD. I need a longer chain as the current one (fitted for a 12-23) is too short. Can I buy just any SRAM or Shimano 9 speed chain. Basically not worried about weight as it will be used on a bike that will be used for shopping with rack and panniers so it just needs to be reliable. The least expensive the better.

As long as it's the right width for your transmission i.e. 8/9/10/11 speed, you can pretty well choose anything you like
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Are there different widths of chains then? Never knew that so glad I asked

Yup 11 speed is a fair bit thinner than 8 speed but as long as you get the right speed chain it doesnt matter about the make

yep keep the speeds the same and you will be OK.

the 11-28 is 9 speed isnt it. as there are 9spd and 8spd 11-28T Sram cassettes out there.

    Great thanks.

Just done a quick check and the current chain is a shimano cn-hg53 which apparently is 2.56" wide but looks like I don't need to worry anyway so long as I get 9 speed I'll be fine. The cassette is definitely 9 speed - phew.
