Presta v Schraeder

Got a new bike about a month ago and noticed the valves were presta type. I'm not sure what advantage this has but I'm considering converting the rims to take car type (Shraeder) valves.

I see it as an advantage as I can use a car foot-pump and have a mini compressor at work (I do cycle to work) both of which have in-line pressure gauges. It gives me more options to get air in.

I've done the conversion before on my old Scott - is there any reason not to convert to car type?

if your rims are not suitable for it.

you can get Presta to Shraeder adaptors that allow foot pumps etc to be used with presta valves.

high pressure tyres, thats it. Just drill the hole bigger, note the size of the valve as if its too big or small you could have a problem

Thanks all. I guess the converter is the easier option!

Check the holes first. Often they are large enough and the Presta valves have slightly tapered nuts.

Adaptors are cheap and you can leave them on, use some thread tape maybe. Or just carry one.

I find Presta are more convenient as it is easier to let the air out of the tube quickly.

After the advise on here I bought an apaptor from LBS - best thing I ever did. Only 99p and it screws onto the presta valve which means no more bending the fragile presta valve whilst pumping up. Simple, effective and cheap!
