    Depends on how hilly your route is I suppose and how many stops for lights etc you have, but seems like an all right time to me. Where do you commute to/from?

    Take the knobblies off and stick on a set of slicks (Cityjets will do)

    You'll take minimum 5 mins off that time for very little money and no extra effort

    As for your OP, good is relative.

    TL = Traffic lights :)

    Slicks may life a bit easier, and grip the road better, too.

    I have a similar commute - 12.9 miles, slightly lumpy om the A38, no TL and only 2 RAB, got in in 40min 12 sec. This is on my summer road bike.....

    Any commute which sees you arrive at your destination in one piece, preferably without any visits from the puncture fairy, is a good commute. :D

    I have been riding a mountain bike on knobblies for the last 2 months on the road ( cannot afford a road bike)
    I have just put slicks on and the ride s have become much easier, I managed 42 miles on Sunday and think this was largely down to less effort required to pedal ( nice and quiet too)

    Yes but 50 minutes will be better and then 49 minutes, 48 minutes etc

    completely off topic (but I will get back, promise). I was born where you are :D

    12 miles in 51 mins is good going for a knobbly mtb. I'm doing 12.2 in about 40-45 with a couple of forced stops and some evil little hills

    You need to look at both directions though as the wind will assist and if you have a downhill run home it will always be quicker than the run in.

    Not unless... you get massive head wind on the downhill way and massive, massive tail wind on the uphill commute.

    Get a proper road bike with road tyres and you'll do it much faster.

    My 19 mile trip in to work takes me a bit less than 65 minutes in (cycling time, so not counting traffic lights/stopping). With stopping it is only a little longer (not many lights) :)

    10 miles for me in around 30 -35 minutes with 3 short but steep climbs, this is on a racked+ mudgaurded low spec aluminum roady.

    If i go on a similarly kitted out mtb hybrid it adds up to 5 mins to the time.

    As others have said its not about how fast you go , its whether you get there in one piece !
