hi there im not the most well off, so if i got a sram x0 super short cage rear mech would i be able to run it as 8 speed if i set the limit screw right? this would only be for a mounth until i can afford shifter, cassette and chain? and does anyone have a link for a sram 11-23 9 speed cassette. cheers rian

If you're not the most well off, buy something else. X.0 is a hell of a lot of money for very little improvement over x.9.
Hell, even the X.5 or X.7 are fine.

Mechs don't dictate the casette size, it's the shifters. So yes, you can run an 8 speed with an X0.

But as others have said, it's not worth it. If you must upgrade, X9 will get you everything with only a bit extra weight.

hell you could run as amy or as few gears as you want.

Like I said Mechs are DUMB (except old Positron mechs) they only do what the shifter tells them.
