Best £300 new bike

I need to get a new bike as my current bike (now about 15-20 years old) is falling to bits.
I am on a budget of £300, but may be able to go up to £350, but that extra £50 will probably be used to get disk brakes anyway.
I am going to be using this for general commuting, stone/gravel paths (I hate going on it on my current hybrid), road use, grassy/muddy trails, and will doing more serious mountain biking later as I have many friends who are into it. I might also be doing my Dukes of Edinburgh expedition on this bike, so do consider that as well. There are also some dirt jumps near me which I might try out.
Currently I am considering a 2009 GT Avalanche 3.0, or a GT Outpost 2010.
Hope you can help guys, thanks a bunch!

I've just got the Carrera Kraken and can't fault it.
I don't know a huge amount about bikes but for me it seems well worth the money at the moment and they are £343 in the sale.0 -
