i have bought some fulcrum racing 7 wheels with skewers for my old bike restoration project. The frame/forks are raleigh 531 from 1988-ish. Now i am a little worried about sheldon browns article on QR skewers as my forkes dont have lawyers tabs like on my new MTB.

Whats the deal with these new skewers? Mine are the exposed cam type in ali. Am i worrying over nothing?

    Yes.

Unless you plan on having them loose and doing wheelies!
  • lol no!

Sheldon is obv very respected so there must be something in his writing? And the introduction of lawyers lips menas there is a risk however small

I think that the perceived risk stems from both people in the USA not understanding what a QR is and using the lever as a sort of wingnut, and, the possibility of MTB fofks moving independently of each other so twistign the axle out of the forkends. 531 forks wont do this - they are very strong indeed ( a head-on crash would commonly result in no damage to the forks, but a bent down and top tube).

Lawyer tabs are more to do with protecting people from their own incompetence rather than being a recognition of an inherent design flaw - the worst possible combination is to use a disc brake, titanium QR with a titanium fork with no tabs - but all accounts the wheel should pop-out at the first opportunity - mine's stayed put for 4 years.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • cheers - i shall ensure they are tight and not worry about it (too much!)
