If they are in a field, chances are they are fly protection
  • it's to narrow their field of vision so that they are less easily frightened by traffic/ wildlife/ people and therefore less stressed and less likely to bolt.

Correct. Limits their vision to forward only, so they can see where they are going, and cant see cars / bikes approaching at speed from behind. Is more normal when they are towing a carriage, where they dont have a rider directly on them to control them.

    Ah, that explains it.

I think he's talking about when they are in a field and the eyes are totally covered, not when they are out with Blinkers on.

I assumed this is what Op was on about, but whlist it looks like a hood it is a mesh to stop the flies bothering said nag

My better half has 2 of these beasts and we have an unbelievable amount of horsey apparel in our house

I usually shout Peek-a-Boo at them as I pass... not sure if they find it amusing

I was - but there was definitely no mesh on this horse - completely 'bagged' as it were and I wondered why

This explains why you never see horses in shopping centres.

Can't be, I'm afraid. I passed plenty of them in France a couple of weeks ago.

Then, recently, there was a guy on TV who actually COULD breath thro his ears.

Been bad here for fly`s as someone correctly said, also sweet itch is a reason some are fully covered esp in summer.
Nice time for a quick reminder here to whistle or shout out "cyclist" when approaching horses from behind (steady !) as they may take fright as both horse/rider unlikely to see bikes approaching, can make them jumpy.
Wide and slow and remember if you are too busy looking at the ladies riding you will veer towards them anyway????

I know some cyclists that need a hood, gag, blindfold...

    All the above!
