hi all, im lookin to buy my first mtb for many years and i like the boardman pro HT, ive seen a few things saying that the tyres fitted on it 'king 2.1' are rubbish and ive seen some posts suggesting that there may not be enough room to put bigger tyres on as the back tyre is very close to the frame. can anyone confirm or unconfirm this please. i would like to put a bigger set of tyres on if i buy it.
and wats the best size tyre to get, 2.3, 2.4?????
thanks for any help.

Depends what you're intending to do.

Conti Speed Kings are alright. I've got a pair on mine, and they do the job, but I've not had much chance to try them on anything tougher than a bridlepath. The general consensus is that they're pretty rubbish though.

I changed my tyres as I wanted puncture protection and 2.2s. I have a full suss but there is loads of room for bigger tyres.

My bike came with rubbish tyres too but I still used them for quite a long time before replacing them :) They were fine with the paths around here on the downs till I started getting a bit more adventurous.

I guess it depends what youll be doing with the bike.

Yeah that shouldnt be a problem. My bike came with 2.1 tyres and I've used a 1.25 tyre and a 2.35 tyre on the same wheels :)

I'm currently using 2.25" Schwalbe Racing Ralphs on my boardman HT, and there's been no rubbing on the frame.

Contis come up small compared to most other makes of tyres.

Why do you want to put a bigger set of tyres on ???

the contis it comes with are fun for a short (drifty) blast but have very little grip for everyday xc use. however theres no need to swap for wider tyres. the grippyist tyres i own are a set of 1.8 panraces, its just a case of finding a set of tyres with a good tread patten. the maxxis advantage 2.1 are a very good tyre and not too expensive.

hope i have been some help

2 reasons really, firstly i thought the extra size would give a bit more comfort with the hardtail and secondly just cos ive heard theyre pretty crap for grip.
as stuy-b says the grip can be sorted with better tread so thanks for that that means that it wudnt be the end of the world even if i cudnt fit bigger tyres on , what do u think about the comfort/cushioning of the bigger tyre guys, will it make a diffrence
