Ever snapped Toras?

I have noticed that where trail/XC forks come, the more money you throw at them, the lighter they get and the more sophisticated the technologies get. What I am wondering is has anyone ever broken an RS Tora fork?

I have searched on google and aside from the odd spring hitting people in the face and adjustment knobs snapping off, there doesn't seem to be a case of actually braking the santions/crown/steerer or lowers of a Tora fork.

Thus I come to the mighty BikeRadar for an insight from the MTBing populous to find out if this has ever been done.

I think generally, something like a Tora will be ridden less aggressively than something like a Fox 36, or a Boxxer.
So, whilst they may not be ultimately as strong, they might already be overbuilt for their intended target audience. If you see what I mean.

I am going to show my lack of knowledge for the more niche MTB disciplines now: isn't 4x just riding a MTB on a BMX track? :?

sort of, but with rougher courses, and body contact. It's basically a wide llandegla black section, with 4 nutters fighting/racing down it "road rash" style.

Yeah, 4x tends to be more agressive

Now that would be funny - winning the race on a different bike to what you started, whilst the guy who owns the bike you're on is shouting at you "that's MY bike!"
  • would be funny seeing someone nicking a competitors bike leaving a bike with 1 wheel left on the floor for him.

Never seen the stanchions snap. In fact I have seen them cause a lot of a damage to frames when the bike has been crashed.

What model is it in the pic above with the snapped brace? Looks like a 2009 SL with the Reba lowers.

I broke a front hub from a sideways landing which didn't seem to do anything to my tora 318s they are heavy but seriously how rugged can such a cheap fork be, with the same wheel (fire eye f920 hub) they feel pretty much as stiff as my shorter Argyle 318s. In fact there seems little point upgrading them for anything this side of Pikes or 'zocchi 55s for the sort of riding I do.

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

Certainly no point upgrading anything to a Marzocchi 55. They're pants.

My mates got 09 55 ata and they pretty much seized so he got 2010 internals after 2 months for free. My 05 pikes are solid :)

I had an 08 55. It was pants. Absolute garbage. After several trips to Windwave, they eventually replaced the internals with 09 ones, which were meant to be more reliable.
they screwed themselves up over night whilst sitting in the garage :?
I had them repaired, but in the meantime replaced them with Fox 36s. The Marzocchis came back and were fine, but never left the box.
After about a month, I decided to stick the 55s on my hardtail frame. When I tok them out of the box, they'd failed again, and they hadn't even been used this time

So, after leaving them for ages, I've been trying to get in touch with Windwave again to get the air internals replaced with the newer coilspring versions - even if I had to pay a bit extra.
I'm still waiting for any answer at all off them. :(

The Toras has a lot of steel in it. Steel is cheaper than the anodized and coated alu stanchions, but also stiffer and stronger.

The lowers of the 302 and 318 are the same as the pre 2009 Revelation. Is basically Argyle uppers with Rev lowers and a beefy crown.

I've seen a Tora 302 from 2007 cracked at the arch.
But it wasn't used for XC.

And also 5 other forks with broken arch.
(Boxxer 2010, XCM, MZ Comp, some Spinner and some RST). Reason: crash.

I find it hilarious when fanbois have slanging matches about broken Boxxers, or Fox 40s, or 888s. When all is said and done, if those forks are ridden as hard as intended, then the likelihood of failure becomes very high.
