Rockshox Recon damper issues

The fork on my son's Giant started losing travel a couple of weeks ago and no lockout (oil in lowers), did a quick fix (drained oil in lowers) added a bit of oil but it happened again (no surprise there!)
Last night stripped the forks but upon re-assambley the rebound damper was not working (stuck on FAST) - turned the adjuster knob to slow, tried adding more oil, took them apart again, no effect (had a VERY late night messing around and finally went to bed defeated!)
However, this morining I had an idea, I removed the lower bolt (on the damper side) and this allowed me to adjust the rebound with the adjuster knob loads more - all is now working, including the lock-out
I can't see what caused the leak into the the lowers in the first place, hoping it won't happen again, problem is I have NO idea how these things work, which doesn't help why trying to fix them!!!

I know I've read it Doesn't always help when things go a bit wrong though and those SRAM video's make it look sooooo easy!!
Tried the travel adjust bit as well, but the internals of the air spring have no spacers (did the same trick on a set of reba's) and got an extra 15mm______________________________________________
