ive strayed across from the road section and need some buying help,go easy on me :? . i have an diamond back m05 which i use for a charity ride. i run out of gears down hill with 42-14 top. im putting on a new rear hub but dont know how many speeds to go and what works with what. the current setup is 7 speed with shimano tourney derailer and sram max grip shift. the problem i have is when its muddy and wet i can't grip the shifter to change gear, so an looking at trigger shifters sram 8 speed. are they like road stuff and only work with sram rear mechs? or will the tourney 7 speed mech work. the other thing is fitting the mech, the frame has no built in hanger and seeems to have a plate hung from the axle, could an sram mech be fitted? i want a 12 t top gear if thats a normal mtb size. im on a second hand budget as well. any suggestions?

Are you getting a new rear hub, wheel, both, or cassette? Do you have a freewheel or cassette?0

Your mech will work with anything. Your cassette must match the shifter for speed. 6,7,8, speed chains are all just about the same. 9 is different.0

thanks. im confused as to which sram shifters work with shimano mechs as non of the road stuff does so. is it just old gripshift like mine.0

Named Sram shifters (Attack & Rocket) work with Shimano rear mechs only
Numbered Sram shifters (SX4,5.. & X5,7,9,0) work with Sram rear mechs only
Any front shifter works with any front mech.
So to work with a Tourney rear mech you'd have to use an Attack or Rocket Sram shifter, or any Shimano shifter0 -
or the really cheap pooey stuff like sram mrx and i think trx grip shifters should work with shimano mechs (this is what generally comes on the budget halfords bikes), but if your using them, them i just feel genuinely sorry for you, noone should have to suffer with them0
