Having rode the red routes on both the above trail centers which 7 stanes center would you recommend next? as I'm working near Ayr for a few days next week and will drive down to the galloway forest for an evening blast, I'm thinking of going to Dalbeattie as on paper it sounds the better but who knows :?

  • Why not do the top half of the Kirry Black route?

There is a car parking area at the bottom of Heartbreak Hill or across the road through the forest gateway to McMoab.

Talnoutry is THE best bit of Kirry

Dalbeattie is good but being one of my locals I am biased

If you have easy acess to the A76 you could nip down to Drumlanrig.

this sounds good, I was annoyed last time I rode "kirry" because I never got enough time to ride The Moab
Is the car park easy to spot ? and this means I will be doing the moab last? :D

Wouldn't recommend Ae myself, it does have some very nice bits but they're too few and far between. I get the feeling it was a learning experience for the trail designer... It's not bad, but it's close to better riding.

Mabie is very nice, but short, you could probably get in 2 or 3 laps though. Try and go there when it's dry, the drainage is terrible, but it's a great wee trail

Kirroughtree black is legendary and it's not so very much harder than the red, though it is a little... But it's still mostly just lovely wiggly singletrack. But I would say that McMoab is potentially a lot of bother if you're not used to more technical riding. And it's a fairly big ride. Still, I love it. Trailpuppet's suggestion is spot on, Talnotry Hill's fantastic, it just goes on and on forever. I could go to Kirroughtree and do nothing but McMoab and Talnotry Hill all day. I don't know Dalbeattie.

There's also Drumlanrig, not a Stane but superb. But its black route is blacker than many, and the red route is a wee bit short.

Car park is at the bottom of Heartbreak Hill, which is opposite the gateway exiting the forest from McMoab. Easy enough to ride the few 100yrds into the forest and have a butchers @ McMoab before setting off up Heartbreak. Plenty of space at that gateway to park as well although may be a bit boggy if wet, used to be a camp site yrs ago.
There is another car park up the road a bit under the big monument( Wallace/ waterloo, can never remember!! )

print the trail map off from Stanes site before you go, have a look at the OS Get a Map site and you will see where to park.

have fun, off to Dalbeattie Tues am.

In the end I chose to ride Dalbeattie and enjoyed every minute, lots of features to play on and hone your skills, the granite slabs are sooo grippy. Got bit by the first terrible twin I went one way and the bike another (at least my knee pads weren't a waste of money) but conquered the bottom one.
Thats 3 down 4 of the stanes to go (done Glentress, Kirroughtree and now Dalbeattie) we will be back up to Glentress at the end of the month, can't make my mine up which I prefer best they are all great in their own ways.
