Doping is now in the arsenal of the champion, and the lesser rider. They dope to finish twentieth, they dope for the time trials, they dope to climb a mountain, they dope to overcome their nerves. Then they dope to get to sleep at night.

All that doping, and yet until the coming of Epo, non of it could 'turn a donkey into a racehorse', let alone a Tour also-ran into a seven times 'winner'.

You sure about that? What about steroids and growth hormone? Steroids aid in recovery - a big benefit in stage racing. And amphetamines can keep you at top energy much longer than normal.

BTW, do you feel the same way about Eddy Merckx? He failed two doping tests while riding at his peak.

Wasnt one of them wrapped in a 'refusal to accept a bribe' mystery though.

How is Merckx's claim about that any different from Lance saying they're all lying about him and out to get him?

I believe people involved have backed-up the story since. Even at the time everyone thought he'd been stitched up (even the Italian press).

(At least that what I read)

The difference is that Eddie is great and Lance is a bit of a twat.
