Hi, I’m looking to get a new set of wheels for my Zesty. I ride mostly the trail centres of south Wales and enter mtb marathons, so want something lightand fast but also strong enough. I am 11 stone in weight.
Here is my shortlist: -
• DT swiss Tricon 1550 - £800
• Mavic Crossmax SLR - £765
• Roval Control SL - £629
• Roval Control EL - £539
• Custom build- DT240 hub, DT super comp spokes, Crest rims - £619
Any recommendations, comments, feedback welcome as I am not sure which to go with.
Thanks, Dan

Can't go wrong with 240s hubs, I have two sets of them & they're excellent hubs. Very strong, smooth, well sealed & easy to convert if needed. The star ratchet system is really good but consider upgrading them to the 36 point kit if you get them, it increases the engagement to an almost instant 10 degree pick up.
If you don't mind buying second hand you can find great deals on them if you do a bit of hunting, both my pairs are 2007 Bontrager Race X Lite wheelsets. These (& others like Magura Pro) are just re-badged 240s hubs but don't sell for as much money.
My latest set of Race X Lites (1500g) only cost me £77 off Ebay a couple of months back, even adding in the price of a set of DT Swiss centre lock adaptors & the upgrade kit they're still great value.0 -
The Roval Control SL looks pretty light for the money, I wonder how flexy they are?0

I went for some 240's, crest rims, alloy nipples and super comp spokes from JRA and they are spot on. The best wheels i have used.0

I've got Controle SLs, they're not bad, if you've got recent Rock Shox forks you can use the OS 28mm end caps for a stiffer front end, which is worth doing. I wouldn't pay £629 for them though to be honest.
I'd get 240s with Super Comps (or Revs) on Alpines myself, although if you want a stiffer wheel the Crest only adds a bit of weight.0 -
Thanks for the feedback so far.
I think I am leaning towards the custom build DT/Crest combo. Do the Crest rims work tubeless? As I have maxxis LUST tyres which I want to use with them.0 -
Yep crests can be ran tubeless. If you order them from JRA all the builds come fitted with stans yellow rim tape.0
