Anyone got experience or knowledge of either the north or south downs as a full day out ride.
I`m coming from high wycombe (just west of M25) and looking for a start point from there.

Peaslake (which is Surrey Hills rather than North Downs) is a mecca of mountain bikers, you can do a 40 mile ride without trouble up there, if you include the North Downs you can make it a lot longer. Depends how all day you want!

You really need to know your way round though, nothing's marked out and the maps that are available can be a bit tricky to follow!

Is a village sat nav and you should be able to find it.

There is a bike shop there that has maps and ideas, look at a forum called london calling as there is a group of riders there that would behappy to show you round.

Just had a first blast round there today. More of a tour 'n' explore than full on trail-hit.

I started at Peaslake....followed sat nav to the shop, Pedal and Spoke, then round the corner to the car park at the bottom of Pitch Hill and kicked off from there (straight up the bridleway, easy). There's loads of MTB'ers around, all happy to point you in the right direction. Peaslake is quaint and the Village Shop is legendary for tea and cake....

You can also get up Holmbury Hill from here. I did a short run up in the afternoon to look around. The two areas are huge and have loads of sneaky runs if you wanna search em out and the views from the top are sweet.

Great fun area, loads to be had, cool people around, I'll be going back for more Holmbury and eventually to hit Leith.
