Clicking Sound
The Sarge

Dear all,
There is an annoying clicking sound coming from the pedals/cranks/chainrings. It disappears when freewheeling or when spinning the pedals when the bike is on a stand. Could this be the pedals need adjusting??
Any thoughts?

Saddle or seatpost could be making that noise0

Bottom bracket when under pressure0

Could be:
Pedals
Cranks
Bottom bracket
Saddle
Seatpost
Headset
Handlebars
Quick releases
Or almost anything else on the bike!
Check all bolts, grease everything that should be greased, try to use a torque wrench so you know everything is at the correct tightness
After all that you may find it's still there but at least you will know that your bike is working at an optimum function!
ETA: also cleats in shoes may be coming loose0 -
Source of the clicking noise on my bike was the BB.
Constant 'click click' when turning the cranks?
Do you not get the sound though when turning the cranks by hand?0 -
No sound when turning the cranks by hand so maybe that suggests that it is only when pressur eis being applied.
Thanks to all for feedbac so far!0 -
What type of shoes are you wearing???
The reason I say this is because I had a strange clicking sound coming from the front of my bike earlier in the year, I discovered it was the type of trainer I was wearing moving inside the toe clips on the pedals.
It used to start after 5 or 6 miles for some reason and drove me nuts.
I finally found the problem but have since changed to clipless and cleats anyway so problem solved.
Could be a long shot but if you cannot make the noise happen when you are off the bike and free wheeling the cranks the only thing that has changed is you not being on it.
Good luck0 -
Two most likely things are
1) crankarms hitting the front derailluer cage. But only in the big ring
2) pedal bearings.
1) you can see and just needs an adjustment to the cage angle or cable tension
2) is more tricky0 -
I had a similar problem when I got new shoes, Northwave, from the left side only. Changed back to my old Diadoras and the noise went.
Another source of the problem?Limited Edition Boardman Team Carbon No. 448

Had exactly the same problem. BB was shot - LBS did a nice job of replacing and only charging me a fiver for labour! Nice. I rode for about a month with the noise until the embarrasment of seeing people turn to look what was coming up the road forced me into action!0

Try pedalling out of the saddle - if the noise stops, its likely to be the seat post or saddle rails. A likely candidate for the source and one of the easiest to fix - undo, slight film of grease and tighten up properly.0
