I live in south Leicestershire, and today I came home to a leaflet pushed through the door about Rutland & Grafham waters. Looking through the leaflet and on the website it seems that there is quite a lot of MTB going on there.

As Ive never been (even though both are only around 1/2 hour drive from me), has anyone spent anytime down there and is there any good off roading to be had?

Any information or stories of past experiences would be appreciated :)

Rutland Water itself is a large man made reservoir - there are 2 bike shops there - one of which is a Giant concept store as far as I am aware. Riding wise, it comprises of a 27mile loop around the waters edge on hard pack tracks - not very exciting at all. I would imagine that Grafham water is much the same.

If you are heading Rutland way then Id suggest hooking up with a few riders from here as I know there are a group out that way - do a search, or hopefully someone helpful will be along :)

Failing that spend an extra bit of time in the car and go to Sherwood Pines.

Grafham is about 10 miles all the way round and its surfaced like Rutland Water is.
Good for an easy ride / fitness spin.

  • As said Grafham is about a 10 mile circuit, it doesn't follow the reservoir too tightly so is slightly hillier than you might think, I stress slightly.
Good bike shop to while away some time in, and a perfectly adequate cafe, ideal for family rides.

Often go there when it's raining and I'm not in the mood to get muddy, it's about 15 mins from me, good to blast a few quick laps. If it's sunny then I forget it, it will be crowded with families and walkers.

Sounds similar to Draycote water (generally flat circuit around a reservoir) which is about 15/20 minutes away from me, but on a larger scale. Might be an ideal place to take the Mrs, but i think ill give it a miss as im usually after a hills and thrills.
