I've got GPS waypoints for this - I must have plotted them from the map, it worked fine until I got to a firetrack climb at the end when my waypoints disappeared into the undergrowth.. if you've got a GPS it's really easy and you don't have to stop and check your map every so often.

If you haven't.. the map is fine, plot in onto the OS map with a highlighter and stick it to your handlebars. It's a great day's ride, don't forget lots of energy food.

PM me if you want the gps file
  • I purchased a map book from the visitor centre with individual and highlighted maps of all the Brecon Beacon routes.
I have had a look at the route for Mynydd Du Forest and it looks quiet straighforward  FAMOUS LAST WORDS

How long did the route take you and is it all rideable. I normally ride trail centres and local mountains in Torfaen, so this will be a new challenge :D

I rode it with a guy who was not too fit, he had problems with energy after 12 miles or so. So treat it with a bit more respect than a trail centre jaunt (tools & food) if you get stuck or tired you're on you own.

Having said that it's no marathon, if you think for example you could get round Cwmcarn a couple of times it'll be a breeze.

Technically it's nothing like a trail centre, there's roads connecting up with firetrack and not too much single track - it's more like a long day out on a hill rather than a downhill blast.

I loved it when I went, as much for the scenery and the exploring as the cycling.

Navigation wise, as I previously suggested you shouldn't have too many problems but I navigate by GPS these days and that means I blast along knowing that I probably wont miss a turn, you'll need to be more aware of the map and the route if you're doing it the old fashioned way. That's no bad thing...

Edit.. forgot to add, probably 6 hours all in. But my mate was seriously slow towards the end.
  • Cheers for all the advice going to wait until my mate can join me dont fancy doing a new ride like that on my own, like you say if i fall off or get lost i am a bit iscolated.
If you are doing any of the Brecon Routes in the future send me a PM would be great to have a a guide.

    Cheers
