I was hoping for some advice on cadence. I have been back riding for about three weeks now after a 15 year break and have done a couple of 40 milers at an average speed of 15mph over fairly hilly ground. However, i am trying to decide is it best to spin at a high cadence or push the big gears which is more fatiguing? What sort of cadence should i be aiming for on the flat/hills?

Whichever feels right. You'll find your natural cadence over time, then you'll automtatically choose a gear to enable that leg speed.

As a *rough* rule of thumb I'd say between 85 and 95 would cover most roadies.
I tend to drop down to around 70 on climbs and llike to push the gear a bit.

Thanks for that, i think i am trying to turn to big a gear and need to get my cadence up slightly. I think i need a wireless computer so i can see what cadence i am actually doing!

You don't! Just pedal at what feels natural!

I have a cadence meter on my computer and I only ever look at it when I am tasked to specifically do a particular cadence by my coach. Which is rare. And then only on the turbo, on the road it is what it is...

My Cadence is roughly 100, drops to about 75 on climbs however. I like spinning for some reason, I guess its just personal preference.
  • i would love to know my Cadence lol apparently i spin my legs like a Freak on Steroids!! according to club members when we went to Manchester veledrome lol :D
