My dilemma

Is it plausible to buy a Commencal Furious to use for downhill and freeride and the like, and then use it for xc rides with my dad who would be on a xc bike? Or am i better buying one for fr/dh and then a trail bike?

It would be possible.
It would be easier if you got an air fork and either an air shock or a coil shock and swap the spring for a stiffer one when doing XC (that would be my choice)0 -

thanks that sounds good never thought of that! thanks
In that case what shock would you recommend?0 -
I would recomend a Fox RC4 shock if you are buying it seperatly but I would just use the standard shock (I believe its a Marzocchi) and just get a heavier weight spring for it0

Personally I'd look at more of a do-it-all bike. Like what I bought.0

Yes you can ride it XC. Yes it'll be horrible, regardless of what you do with the suspension. It's about 40lbs and you'll have it built to go down hills not up. Even a bargain basement XC bike will do the job better really.Uncompromising extremist0

Why not a Spicy ????0

I wouldn't recommend an RC4 for the furious, as the resovoir is too big.0

I've tried over the last year to do the whole 'Lord Of The Rings' bike thing.
You know, one bike to rule them all, but what I found was that all you end up with is a bike that isn't actually very good at anything, it'll just do everything ok.
I built up an Orange Patriot, 6" travel, slack angles etc etc, thinking that I can pedal up, bomb down, do some downhill, trail centres, even some XC, and while it would in fact do all of those, it just didn't do any of them really well.
At the end of the day compromise is just that, compromise....so the Patriot frame is now art that hangs on the garage wall and I've bought a proper downhill bike to go with my Morewood trail bike that lay in a corner of the garage for the last year like a well-worn porn mag.
This all depends of course on (A) funds, and (B) your desire to do XC or DH as well as you can. I made my choice. 2 bikes.0 -
I have to say, I'm more than happy with my Wolfridge with Fox36s. It gets me up the hills well enough, but can really tear it up on the downs.0

...but those green brakes though, oof! :shock:0

I like the green brakes
Shame the pedals don't match, but meh.0 -
...and that Blackspire Stinger roller in red?! God, it SOOOOOOO clashes!!0
