I'd expect nothing less from a man that takes PT to work...

    Ooooo.

    Low blow.

Buying a BMW or Audi, Vauxhall or Ford, Samsung or Sony, Castelli or Northwave These shallow comsumer-led things define us, it places us in groups and gives us the security of belonging. Who really buys a Skoda because its a VW priced with none of the branding, who really admits to being or wanting to be that person? Where is the expression of life!?

I admit to being that person but not for the reasons you describe. I drive a new Skoda Octavia because I want to. Price of my Octavia Estate : 15k. Price of golf estate with exactly same engine and spec. 21k.

That's why I bought one and I love it!

As soon as you try to be cool by definition you are not.

Yeah you see if I had the money I wouldn't buy a new car from the show room because I know I could get a second hand one a few years old, with exactly the same (or better) spec for less money (and in some cases a better brand/build quality).

    But each to their own.

I still feel hurt about the public transport comment.

If Intel processors were better than AMD ones, Intel wouldn't need to bribe Dell to use them:

And I wouldn't trust Dell to build a computer right:

The two processors I'm considering are:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor ULV SU7300 (1.3GHz, 800MHz, 3MB)

    And

AMD Athlon II Neo K325 (Dual Core) Processor

OK I'll weigh in. The TDP's for these processors are 10W and 12W respecitively. This is Thermal Design Power and is only an indication of the max power they can use, not how much they use on idle. This is fairly low for a laptop. How hot it gets depends on how well the cooling solution is designed, not how much heat it puts out. And your battery will be screwed up in a year or two anyway so don't worry about battery life.

Either are likely ok for what you want to do, Im guessing you don't want to play Starcraft II all day.

They are not the same as Campy vs. Shimano. People don't judge you by what processor is in your laptop. Everyone knows SRAM is the best system anyway.

Edit: I have Android, it's for open minded free thinkers.

Wouldn't trust The Register to report things straight either.

The stories seem to be true. All these big companies cut their margins to the bone, engage in shady practices, and would sell off their grannies for a dollar, so in that sense they are all the same.

I am sure dirt could be dug up on AMD, too, but they didn't have to bribe Dell to get AMD processors into product, the simple explanation being that Intel processors were not as good.

And no, it's not fine if you (ie your company) gets burned by dodgy Dells <grinds axe>.

Not sure if you've bought yet but there's what seems to be a very good offer at Sony at the moment. It goes over your £600 though, but worth mentioning.

They're doing a free upgrade to a Core i7 processor on their Vaio S Series (the option would normally be +£230). The Core i7 should easily beat any ULV Core Duo or AMD offering. Shorter battery life but far far quicker.
It's above the £600 budget, but if I were shopping for a laptop at the moment I'd take advantage of it, the laptop below seems seriously quick for the price.

    https://www.sonystyle.co.uk/SonyStyle/V ... t=14003206

Configure the one on the left
Select the upgrade to Intel® CoreTM i7-620M, 2.66GHz
    Select the upgrade to a 320GB 7200RPM HDD (+£30)

Comes to £859. More than your budget but you'll get a laptop that would still feel quick in a few years rather than one that feels average now.

    Processor: Intel® CoreTM i7-620M, 2.66GHz
Operating system: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
Hard drive: 320 GB Serial ATA (7200 rpm)
    Memory: 4 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
    Optical Drive: DVD disc drive
    Display: 33.8 cm LCD, 1366x768 + webcam
    Graphics: Intel® HD Graphics
