If it will take full guards then SKS are reckoned to be the best. If clearance is tight then Crud Roadracer.

SKS without doubt. Don't worry too much if you have close clearances and are only intending to use it as a winter bike. I have a close clearance Bianchi as my winter bike. WIth p-clips and a bit of modification around the rear brake bridge and a notch to clear the front mech band, I have got very, very nearly full guards with virtually no clearance to the brake bridge or seat tube. Far more effective than any clip on's.

    Normal SKS Blummels modified - http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... KSAMUDR200
Front: V piece fixed with P-Clips
Back: V piece fixed with P-Clips. Cut out around brake bridge supported with cable ties to brake bridge and metal strip from screwfix custom bent by me and my vice.(http://www.screwfix.com/prods/16050/Iro ... Pack-of-10). The fixing clamp needs a rivet in it to stop it slipping as it is no longer just a support / positioning piece. Cut out at seat tube to accomodate front mech band and secured at seat tube by cable tie.

Took one evening to complete and there is no comparison to raceblades. The only compromise to full gards is the rear brake does not get protected.

Since this photo I also have flaps cut from Damp Proof Course membrane attached with zip ties (thanks for the idea Monty Dog) which makes tham even better when really wet.

I don't think SKS are that good. I have used them extensively

There are some new Crud Roadracers coming out that offer almost full coverage. Watch this space!

Good post and nice looking bike Coach H - certainly smarter than my winter steed.

Some close up pics of the customised areas might be useful..?

I like the Cruds MK1 but haven't really thought about them in the context of regular commuting or touring. They are quite flimsy but, then again, they have lasted well so far and I did use them a lot over the awful winter we just had.

On holiday now for a week. Will try to sort close up photos if I remember and if this thread is still active.
