I'm rebuilding a Trek Elite 9.9 SSL that I have recently bought and have a couple of questions to put out there before my local shop sees me coming!

This is the original as produced in 2008

Does the frame fit external hollow BBs? Such as this:

If not, what BB do I need and is there a limit to the cranksets I can fit? I did hear you can get converters, but I'm not sure how sensible that is.

I don't want to replace like for like as the current cranks are butt ugly 8)

Also - Does anyone know if you can get crash replacement on this carbon frame through Trek should anything come up on the scan?

Thanks

Yes,the frame will fit external BBs, but only certain cranks fit certain external BBs - they usually come packaged together anyway. You will need to get the frame faced, so the bearing cups will align properly.

Are you the original owner, bought from a Trek dealer?

They were stupidly expensive though and rather light, £400ish IIRC without BB, made by Stronglight, may be worth trying to sell!

An external BB will fit in that, as SS said, but if you do get a warranty/crash replacement (which Trek do offer) it won't, you'll need a standard outboard bearing chainset, but it's a press-fit 'BB90' style bottom bracket.

I got the bike off ebay. For a good price and from the original purchaser too so not bad. It was a gamble buying secod hand, I normally buy new (but after Evans told me unless I get the bike serviced with them specifically then the warranty is worthless I'm not so fussed), but after a close inspection the frame seems fine. It would be good if I could get covered on crash replacement though as I do want to get the frame scanned by my local Trek dealer.

I've got my eye on a RaceFace chainset with carbon cranks, and they come with external BBs so it's good to know that will work! Thanks

njee20 - yeah that's them. They would be fine but the rings are worn out, the small ring is buckled(!) and the alloy strip up the centre of the crank arm on each side is coming off, so I wouldn't want to take money for them - if you want them, feel free to come and get them!

I'll have to look into chainsets that fit that bb if Trek come good on the crash replacement. I've mailed them, just waiting for the response.

    Thanks

I'm confused then, does the frame need replacing then, or is this a theoretical 'if it needs replacing'.

Do your local Trek dealer have X-raying facilities!? There's sod all else they can do other than look at it! Build it up and ride it, it'll be fine.

You have no warranty then I am afraid, and no crash replacement policy. All this stuff applies to original owner only.

Actually Trek have been known to subsidise frames for subsequent owners, I don't really get why you'd need that though, and like I say, I doubt your dealer will be able to do anything!

Crash replacement is something I wanted to know I might be covered by in case the dealer points out something serious that I missed. That's all I wanted to know about that really. I'm confident it's fine - but assurance is everything.

Now, if I voided any cover I would be entitled to by swapping the bb or any other components then I wouldn't do it. But if I'm not covered anyway... Swap them I shall.

And changing parts wouldn't void the warranty anyway.
