Shimano DX 424 Pedals issue

One of the end caps retaining the cage on my DX pedals seems to be wiggly - at any rate, more than the one on the other one. A known issue is that these are liable to fall out, followed by the spring and any other related bits rendering the cage rather useless.

I'd like to stop this from happening.

The exploded view at http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 608610.pdf is not very clear as to how the end cap is attached - it seems to be splined, but is that it?

Or does the screw, part of assembly 5 at the LHS, retain it? In which case I may assume that this has become loose so I must now remove the shaft from the pedals to be able to access this?

If the latter is correct, then I would go about this by unscrewing part no. 2, I presume - can anyone advise whether the threads are LH / RH depending on the side, or otherwise?

Thanks for any help...

Removed shaft from pedals, an M5 crossheaded screw retains the end cap or rather pivot that the cage pivots on. Loctited, and also added a dab of Araldite to a side of the screw heads for a bit more insurance, removable but hopefully not of its own accord.

Hope all well for a while!
