I ran out of it one day about 2 years ago, haven't used any since, not really missed it either, plenty of rides around 70miles. Not many in the rain thoughnow as I can't be bothered doing long wet rides, which is where I found the cream most useful when I used it.

    I'ved used both.

Assos at a tenner and Sudocreme at 2 quid, try both and see. Sudocreme makes a mess if you use too much, cant get it off.

As a rule of thumb I use Assos on longer +25m rides. if I'm just going out for a quick blast under 90 mins I use Sudocreme.

How much of this stuff do people use? As I said earlier, my tub's covered me for 1700 miles and will make 2000 I'm sure. Even at a tenner, it's one of the cheaper aspects of cycling - £1 every 200 miles - 50p a week for me. That's the same as a Kit Kat from our vending machine! All to keep everything down there nicely sorted.

This might be a stupid question, but do you guys wear padded underwear under your cycling shorts/bibs or do you just put the cream on then your shorts/bibs?

Shouldn't really speak for everyone here but I would gamble that everyone's shorts already have padding and therefore go commando.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.
  • Never had a problem on the road bike but had bad saddle sores on the MTB. I use chamois cream on hot days, particularly since going to a hardtail.

It definitely makes a difference to multi day riding and hot days

I don't get the requirement for this stuff to be honest.

Plenty of long days in the saddle on my MTB and no need for it, on recent road rides including the London 2 Paris I've just done (332 miles in 3.5 days) through a rather warm northern France and no soreness or chaffing experienced at all.

Maybe it's just me, but is it just another 'cycling essential' we all have to buy?

Afterall whats the point of anti-bacterial, super smooth shorts liners then?
  • did paris to london myself and tbh felt guilty being sponsored and could have rode it one legged.

I have never had a saddle sore until riding my hardtail 8 wks ago on a weekend riding my hardtail.

8 hours in the saddle first day 6 second and my arse was in pieces, I could not of ridden the second day without the cream(and the fact i wore 2 pairs of shorts). i also hate to think how bad it would have been if I had not used it on the first day

In response to the OP, chamois creams generally tend to wash out easier as opposed to Sudocreme etc.

I've tried many cremes, the PBK own stuff was good, but run out and started using Vasoline as it was all I had available, works well but a bugger to wash out.

Sudocreme is good as a treatment for saddle sores but not IME as a prevention - it can dry the skin out and make the problem worse.

Cant see past Assos (i like the minty ness!) but im sure the alternative slightly cheaper chamois creams are good too.
