Buying in America

Hi guys,
I'm currently in America for a few weeks before returning to the UK via boat (Royal Navy) and i'm looking at buying a new HT bike whilst i'm here.
I was going to wait until I returned to get my new bike, but after some reseach over here, it would seem the bike I am interested in is a tad cheaper stateside.
I have compared the spec and both the UK and the US version are identical aside from colour scheme - the question I have is, has anyone purchased from abroad before and if so, is there anything I need to be aware of before I make my purchase. At the moment there is a saving of about £350 to be made and it seems a bit too good to be true.
The bike is a specialized Stumpjumper comp - £1500 in the uk and £1150 in the states.
Any assistance gratefully accepted.
Regards,
Mark.

on import to the UK expect 14% import tax and then Vat at the current rate to be added.

if you can get the bike on the ship im sure you would be able to evade customs, if you were that way inclined.0

out of interest - if you put the thing in a bike bag and on your return trip (assuming its not a return flight) said you'd been on a bike holiday (take it for a couple of rides first for a little authentic wear and tear), how would customs potentially pick it up?Lapierre Spicy 516 XTR custom (2013) -http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=129323320

the onus if on you to prove you have owned the goods for more than , IIRC 3 months, and even is used tax is still payable."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
