After considering the MRP XCG bash guard for a while ( http://www.mrpbike.com/product.php?sect ... t&item=xcg ), I decided that I'd pop into my LBS today to see if they had one that I could buy. They didn't, but chatting to the shop owner about this product he pointed out that it could swivel about the BB in its mounted position, leaving the big ring exposed. Looking at figure 3 (point 5 of the fitting instructions, http://www.mrpbike.com/pdfs/XCG%20Insta ... ctions.pdf ), it seems that because of the recesses this would not be likely to happen.

I've never heard of this rotation/swivelling happening but I'd like to know if anyone has experienced it as I don't want to be wasting my money on something that isn't fit for purpose. :?

Mine did one time, but then I thumped a root hard enough that I'd have regretted it either way even without the guard. In the end I ditched the big ring anyway and don't regret it at all but this is a decent product if you want triples. It's a lot nicer catching the taco than it is catching a chainring.
