    what crankset?

there are lots of Deore cranks.

Did you have the shell faced?

the new Deore 590 and the LBS who did the work said the facing was fine but work was needed to remove weld spit from the threads (which they duly did)

    So the LBS fitted it?

so they chased the threads and say they checked the facing.

what type of squeak is it?

the LBS fitted the BB and cranks as well?

it's more a creek, then squeak, together, both sides on each downward pedal stroke.

yeah the LBS got me a deal on the crankset and fitted it for me. the 590 comes with that deore BB so they fitted that too. they did the lot and it's been fine for a month or two and then this noise kicked in - it's not going away.

ahhh so it is not a new fitting.

unfortunately the shimano cups use a plastic sleeve between the axle and the bearing.

there are companies that will upgrade your bearings to better ones that dont use the plastic sleeve.

pull the cranks off and lube up the bearing surfaces and the axle and re fit.

if it shuts up you know the plastic bit is the issue.

definitely not pedals I've had squeaking pedal ache before that progressed into a pumping sound, like one of those bass-y but barely audible fart / parps

Nick, that sounds exactly like what's going on now you've said it. the LBS did say that if i got a problem with the work just to send it back to them and they'd sort it - so i'll whip in this morning and have a word. two thing though:

    1) I'm all right for going out on it this weekend, yeah?

    2) can you remember the name of that bearing upgrade package thing?
