Looking to upgrade my Genesis

Hi all,
Looking for some help/advice.
I have a Genesis Core 10 bought second hand and I am looking to make some upgrades.
Pretty new to riding so please bear with me. I have been looking at the SRAM X7 rear derailleur which seems to look ok in the reviews, anyone have any thoughts on this?
Also, the cables on the bike are a bit worn at the ends so thinking of changing them or would this be a bit of a waste of time?
The brakes dont seem to be as responsive as a GT I used to have either, both bikes have Shimano Hydraulic Discs. I'm not sure if the oil may need to be changed. I know this is a bit of a mess on so would it be best to let a pro do it? and how much would it cost?
