A rather large difference I reckon.

spoinning out at about 26 at the mo and managing any hill easilly, so thought it would get the top end speed up a good bit, with the obvious downside of making hills a chore

at 80-90 rpm it will be between 21-24 mph. the 127 rpm spinout on the 42 you will be going 33.5 mph.

Depends if you like walking or not.

That's a big jump AND to a pretty big gear. My single speed is 48x17 and I wouldn't want it much bigger despite having fairly strong legs.

go for it then, you'll be fine.

If only there was a way of having a low gear for going up hill and a high gear for going downhill on the same bike.

gearing is way too low at the moment

looking to start riding grasstrack this year and hopefully track pretty soon.

Legs are fairly strong, so should hopefully be ok, and have stronger legs in a few months?

Chris Hoy only rides 51x14 for the sprint, exactly what sort of riding were you thinking of doing in your 54x16 !?!

    seems fine

hardly going to use it for hill climbs

got a geared road bike which MAY be more suitable?

    just for fast commute/tt/track

Someone must be bored, or possibly it was a real question. Fit the 54 - you'll be dying in a head wind, and be off and walking on any hill if you do venture away from the flat.
