Hi, just got in to road riding (normally MtB's) and loving it! Have a Felt Z35, v happy with frame, but would like to upgrade to compact chain rings etc but first need a set of good wheels. Any sensible price suggestions, carbon?
Thanks
Thanks

The thread above this one "Wheel Upgrades" has some good suggestions.
Are you proposing to change from a Standard Double to Compact? If so then you will need a compact chainset, a new chain and a new cassette - no point mixing new with old. You might even need a new BB also and many chainsets come with a new BB. Probably best if you take it to your LBS if unsure.Specialized Venge S Works

I was sceptical at this too, but it seems that if you have a standard road chainset (i.e double chainring with a 39t inner, and 53t outer), and you want to change to a compact, you will in fact need to buy a new set of cranks.
The BCD (Crank bolt spacing) of standard road cranks are 130mm (135mm for campag), the BCD of compact cranks are 110mm, so you can't put a 'compact' inner ring on instead of a normal inner.
As you're getting new cranks, as suggested, it's probably a nice idea to get a new chain and cassette too. (If you're changing the cassette, you need to change the chain anyway due to the way chains and cassettes wear).0 -

No I wasn't p1ss taking. I thought from the title the OP wanted basic advice and wasn't on an unlimited budget.Specialized Venge S Works

Chainrings wear much more slowly than cassette sprockets and chains, due to the substantially fewer cycles they do and the greater number of teeth over which the chain load is distributed.
Just as you don't replace your chainrings every time you swap out chain and cassette, you're unlikely to need to replace your chain and cassette just due to a chainset swap. You may need to take a couple of links out of your chain though, as you are going from a double to a compact.- - - - - - - - - -

You may also need to move the front derailleur down a little ( easy enough to do ) . The 53 tooth front ring is larger then the compact 50 . If there is a large gap between the derailleur and the chain ring the change up and down will feel like its like a train changing rails .
I also have a pristine Ultegra 10 speed compact and bottom bracket you could have if you make me a reasonable offer . If you want brand new have a look at
