Seatpost offset

Can anyone tell me how this is measured or is it one of those proportions that vary by manufacturer

Just to add light to my problem, I have an Oval R700 road post which claims to offer an offset of 28mm.
I am assuming this is with the seatclamp set as far back (and pointing uselessly skywards), as possible.
The front of the seatclamp is barely 10mm behind the front of the extended seatpost line when I have it set for my saddle.

I could do with another 1cm of offset to get the ideal position (as per bikefit) with my current saddle and was looking at various seatposts. They are advertised as having less offset than the R700 but in the online pictures they appear to be set further back.

Arggh :x

The offset or setback is measured from the centre line of the post to the centre of the rail clamp. You may struggle to find a post with much more than 28mm, many are only 20mm.

FSA K-Force do 25mm and 32mm setback posts.

Ritchey do a large setback post aswell but I can't find a link to it.

    Thanks to you both. :D

Just remeasured my seatpost from centre to centre and it comes out at 15mm. I guess it would go back to 28mm but then it would be pointing upwards! (It's a curve at the top with a slot through it).

If I can get one that's a genuine 25mm offset then it looks like I'm sorted.
Maybe not the SLK carbon reddragon as at that price the wife is likely to make me sit on it without the saddle attached

Setback has nothing to do with which way the saddle points, it's how far behind the centre of the seatpost the clamp is.

More setback = saddle further back

    Ritchey WayBack it's called.

Look ergopost 4 has a wide range of adjustment but costs a pretty penny! looks very nice though :-)

Also VeloOrange do a nice shiny alloy post with 30mm setback.

Some options out there for those of us with setback challenges :-)

Didn't / don't SDG do a system called I-beam or something where the rails are replaced by a single girder-like thing, to give a lot more forwards / backwards adjustment?

Then you'd be stuck with a proprietary saddle / post system
