My custom Rockhopper (now with carbon goodness)

This is my bike - 2008 Specialized Rockhopper. Bought it 2nd hand off a good mate about 10 weeks ago. It started life as a Rockhopper Disc, but ive made a few changes since...
Gets used primarily for commuting, but with one eye on some off road action. This represents my return to biking after a 15 year sabbatical. Used to own a Cannondale which i built myself from scratch, and a GT, but they both got nicked in quick succession, which put me off for a while. Then i started driving....
Anyhoo, here are a few piccies
XT 4 pots, front and rear. Ashima SOS pads and G2 rotors (for now)
XT Shadow rear mech and XT cassette
Race Face Dues Stem, Race Face Ride flat bars, XT Dual Action shifters
Easton EA50 seatpost, Selle Italia Yutakk seat (bit unusual, not to everyones taste, but very comfortable), Specialized Mini Seatpak
I have an SLX chainset waiting to be fitted, and next on the list is to add some colour (red anodised bolts, skewers etc)
Thoughts welcome

Some more tasty bits added to the Spesh
SLX Chainset with red chainring bolts. Was a triple, but have reduced to a double.
XT Shadow Mech with red bolts and jockey wheels
Deore front mech with new bolts (spot the red frame bolts as well)
Red anodised stem cap (stem bolts are now titanium)
And my favourite bits, XT 4 pots with added anodised goodness (hope skewers are also new)
Next up will be some red Jagwire gear cables and a Hope seat post clamp (yes, in Red)0 -
BTW - your rear mech is not on right.
The screw plate should be almost horizontal, so the cable into the mech is almost vertical.
You then get a better line and remove some of your excess cable.
That's if the pics were not taken while WIP0 -
i.e like the pic before you started 'blinging' it.....0

excellent!0

More things added to the Spesh today
FSA K Force Flat bar 640mm
Grey superstar grips with white rings
Goodridge gear cables in white
Superstar spacers
Well chuffed with the bar. Its wider than the RaceFace bar it replaces, but it feels a bit more comfortable. Much more forgiving as well. First foray into carbon and me likey. And the bar was a bargain off eBay.
Finally have the sealed gearing i need so badly. My commute is getting muddier and muddier, so the Goodridge cables are needed.
The bike is now down to 12kgs bang on. Wheels need doing next to pull it down towards 10kgs.

Very nice. Which wheels you go going for?2010 Specialized Rockhopper
2012 Bianchi Infinito0 -
Where did you get the red bolts, and red jockey wheels from? Thanks.0

Those forks weigh a ton! I'd have changed those long before ti bolt kits!0
-
Get these, they'll take nearly 1kg off, and be more noticable than the wheels unless you spend quite a lot, and white will the the biz 8)

You are reading my thoughts gents
Next up for the 'hopper...
Fulcrum Red Metal 3 wheels
Rockshox SID Race forks
Swapping out the shimano 4 pots. I do love them, but they weigh nearly a kilo, so moving to something lighter. Was eyeing up some Formula Oro K18's (CRC have a complete set for £150), but that means changing the shifters, which i quite like
Swapping out the wheels and forks should take me under 10kgs
@klash - ti and alu bolts and jockey wheels are from Toronto Cycles0 -
If you using this on the road surely it would have been better to remove the granny ring and keep the large ring on.
I know from riding my XC bike on the road and I hardly shift down from the large front ring and would like larger to get more speed on the down hills.
You must max out at what - 25mph ?DCR00 wrote:Swapping out the wheels and forks should take me under 10kgs

Most of my riding is trail. Im lucky enough to live about 2 miles from the Trans Pennine Trail, which leads to roughly 1/4 mile from my work. True that i could stick a larger ring on, and i may do so, but am happy with the current set up.
Not sure where you get the 500g saving on the wheels. My OEM wheels weight around 4kgs. TBF thats with 600g of tyre and a few hundred gram of sprocket, but given that the Red Metal 3 weight around 1400 grams, i still stand to lose way more than 500g (TBF the bike is under 12 kgs now since i fitted the Gusset pedals)0 -
Sorry, I didn't' intend to come across as harsh, just trying to be realistic with weights.
For sure if you're talking about changing tyres, cassettes as well as wheels and forks then 2 kg is probably achievable.
I just looked up the Metal 3 wheel set and according to Fulrum and CRC sites they weigh 1685g at their lightest. Add the skewers and you're looking at 1870g for the set.

Where did I get the 500g saving on the wheels from?
Changing your wheels but keeping the rest the same, the weights work out as follows :
Fulcrum 3 wheels - 1870g
Brake Discs - 200g (assuming 160mm all round)
XT Cassette - 260g
Tubes - 250g (assuming standard tubes)
Tyres - 1120g (assuming wire bead Conti Twisters)
Total - 3780g
So not far off your 4kg estimate of current wheel setup above.Specialized Enduro SL Pro Carbon
Specialized Stumpy Evo Carbon
Canyon Aeroad Disc Di2
Specialized FSRxc - XC Race Bike0 -
my tyres dont weigh 1120
they are supersonics so they only come in at 740 for the pair
i totally got the wheel weights wrong (wishful thinking maybe)
seems that i do only stand to lose around 750g from the wheels, but combined with the savings on the forks and the calipers, i should be close to 2kg0 -
Nice bike. You've got me wanting to bling mine up now!Current Bikes:

frame, ritchey headset and a set of 2009 Fox F100 RL for 800 sheets, which i reckon is a pretty good deal
