Hello,

I'm in need of a gear cable set for a MTB build.

I've got these in mind -

Shimano XTR
Transfil Nox Snake
Transfil Flying Snake
Transfil MudLovers
Jagwire Ripcord

They're all close in terms of price and descriptions.

I'm not going for Gore ride-on and SRAM Pit Stop.

Thanks!

I've had XTR cables for a while now and they still run perfectly. You can get them relatively cheap too :-)

cheapest shimano ones you can buy, then keep then clean and lubed, job done.

Haven't tried most of what you mention, but I used Flying Snakes for a while, and they were great - they fit in perfectly with my "xero maintenance, zero cleaning" regime.

XT outer, XTR inner - and don't lube 'em

Anything with stainless braided outer and as above, DO NOT LUBE THEM.
  • xtr inners and some SP41 from your lbs for full cable runs, (sp41 is xtr outer)

    What happens if you do?

Is this advice because it doesn't need lubing or will the world come to an end if you do lube them?

I have no idea what the current cables I've got are anyway, and give them a spray with GT85 occasionally. Don't know if that helps or not.

What about cleaning muck out? this thread suggests use of cable oilers and GT85 or likewise results in much dirt removal. How do zero maintenance cables work or do they just gunk up until you have to replace them?
