I do like the Avid levers, I prefer the shape slightly to the Shimanos. Not really any huge difference though, so just personal preference. Same for the actual brakes, they're basically as good as each other.
For the pads though, I'd definitely go for Koolstop Salmons. I won't use anything else with any rim brakes I have any more.0
