Speeding fines

Yep I think Al's got it. Dual carriageway, NOT a motorway, your van is limited by law to 60 mph making you 14mph over the limit not 4mph.0

That'll be it Sheeps,a medium wheelbase, medium roof, Tranny panel van has a kerb weight of around 1,800 kg, so the GVW is bound to be over 2000kgs, which would mean the lower speed limit would apply.
I'm afraid it looks like you were 14mph over the speed limit, not 4mph
thats fair enough, either way, i was still driving too fast so i'll take my medicine0 -
if the curb weight is 1800kg, and i only had me , a passenger and a direct fire mortar in the back, could i argue that we didnt weigh more than 2000kg all wrapped up?
or is that not how it works?0 -
In your defence, we're on page 2 and only 2 people knew of the lower speed limit applying to good vehicles.
I think the hire company should at least put a sign of some kind in their vehicles warning people of this.0 -
Double post
Move along please, nothing to see here.0 -

Sorry dude, doesn't work like that.
The gross vehicle weight is the maximum the vehicle CAN carry, (probably 3500 ish-kgs in the case of the transit)0 -
blimey, bearing in mind i have been driving vans for about 10 years and i have an HGV license and i am a trained blue lights driver, it appears that my knowledge of the road is pi55 poor as funk!!!!0

3 points on a m-way will barely effect your insurance- I got caught twice on the m6 and my insurance was still competative.0
-
Not to mention if they show you doing 74 your speedo probably showed you doing nearer 80. You are a very bad boy.
On the plus side your 60 quid will help dig our once great country's economy out of the hole it is currently in!Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
I used to work for Aviva and 3 points for a SP30 made no difference to the premium, but if you get 6 points it starts to make a difference.Ride it like you stole it!0

Don't talk to me about North Wales constabulary and their speed cameras...

Briggo wrote:butcher of bakersfield wrote:gazderry wrote:jebus 74 in a 70 seems awfully harsh, I always thought you had 10% leeway, obviously not
Nope. No leeway at all. The boss at work has been caught several times doing less than 34 in a 30.
Mobile cameras are operated by individual organisations. I can't remember if this also applies to static cameras.
First off, the "leeway" is up to 10%, 34 is over that leeway, although that leeway seems to have gone out of the window now with this example.
If you want to be pedantic, I said under 34. i.e. 32, 33.As far as Im aware from experience there is still the whole leeway scenario, the scamera near me hasn't gone off when I was just over the limit by accident, however it does flash at people properly speeding.
Second off, since when are mobile speed cameras operated by individual organisations.
They're not operated by constabularies. I may be wrong, and I'll take the hit on this one if I am, but my memory tells me, that the non-profit organisations who operate them are separate from county to county.0 -
Sheeps, you'll have got both letters because you signed for the vans. Police will have got your details from the Van Company, it's now your responsibility (legally) to shop your mate.
Would have been quite funny if your full weight was under two tonnes and when they demanded you prove it you fling open the back doors and they find themselves staring down the barrel of a motar, run away, run away
Very few people have a reasonable knowledge of the road laws. How many people know what 2 yellow lines painted on the kerb at 90 degrees to the road mean?
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

i havent got the letter i was sent on me but im sure the offence occured on the 7th of june and the leter sent to me wasnt dated until after the 20th of june, is the whole "you need to receive a notice if intended prosecution within 14days" an urban myth?0

Did the Dual carriageway have a central reservation in it, separating both sides of the road?
If it didn't, then the Speed Limit is 60mph for all vehicles anyway, it's the central reservation that increases it to 70mph.
Though I would definitely be asking the camera people how you could have been in 2 vehicles at the same time, and then ask them to prove which van you were in!It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

it does have a central reservation.
im slightly annoyed at myself for not realising i should have been at 60. the reason ive never had a speeding ticket before is that i tend to try and drive at a sensible legal speed, sure, i wander above 70 on the odd occasion but i slow down as soon as i realise.0 -

Erm, maybe you'd better do the driving then if we're heading out riding :oops:0 -

Wow that's shocking, let me guess they get a cut of the fines?
There are some things you just can't outsource...0 -
Of course they get a cut of the fines! Actually I don't know if they do or not, but when these buggers hide behind blind bends, or inside a horsebox on an otherwise safe stretch of road then they deserve all the hate they get.
I've even seen them (as have many others) hidden behind the gates to a local crematorium, which is in rather bad taste considering they have "Arrive Alive" written across the side of the vans.
Some guy even made a song about it.0 -

whats the score with speeding fines? ive been driving for 11 years and never had a single point on my license for anything so am in new territory.
how much will i be fined for speeding, how is the fine issued (do i have to go to court?) when do i have to pay it?
cheers.
was it on a dual carrigeway or a motorway? if it was a dual carrigeway the speed limit is 60mph for a van. i found this out whilst also doing 74mph!!! :evil:0 -

to be fair...i reckon most folk don't actually know all of the raod rules which apply to them....
bad luck...
as you already know...pay the fine and move on...
not sure about shopping your mate though...i thought they had to do that bit....Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

It's your legal repsonsibility to identify someone who's driving a vehicle registered to you if they get caught being naughty. I would imagine this extends to Sheep's case seeing as he signed for both vehicles. If you don't identify the driver it's assumed you were driving. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Assuming you're putting your hand up and declaring yourself as the driver you can still try to challenge it if you feel like having a go. Usual stuff like whether the speed detector in the Talivan was properly calibrated. There's plenty of stuff on the forumss like the above one."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0
