I've recently acquired Mercury Pro Race 7005 aluminium hand built frame. I'm planning to make it up into a winter trainers, but wondered if anyones knows the history about this brand.

Kind regards

James

The headtube badge gives it away - EC is Ernie Clements - he was silver medallist in the Olympic RR in 1948. Expect Mercury was his 'shop brand' of bikes with Clements Cycles in . Ledbury, Worcs. Ernie died in 2006 but Cycles Clement continues.

In terms of your frame, this is probably an imported frame - probably Italian or more likely Taiwanese as it used 7005 alloy and the fact that it uses a threaded headset, dates it around 2000 - everyone switched to aheadset soon after.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Crikey MD, well identified. Are you this site's Norris McWhirter (without the rightwing slant)?!

Thanks Monty, a mine of information as always.

Decals on the frame suggest it was "Handmade in England" but I can fully believe it was imported.

Handbuilt probably means 'assembled' - I don't know of anyone making 7005 frames in the UK but I'm happy to stand corrected
