Cargo bike for commuting

ATM I have a road bike, which I bought because I was dazed by the glamour or roadies. Now after a while I realized that I don't really need a road bike. I have two children so I bought a trailer to take them for rides, now I am buying a rack and panniers because I am tired of a wet back from the rucksack I'm carrying. So I though something along the lines of Bullit or even perhaps Christiania bike would be better for me.
Has anyone had any experiences riding these bikes? Can you imagine using them in London - I sometimes have trouble using the cycle infrastructure with a trailer alone (bolards, curbs)?
I know these bikes are extremely costly but at the same very cool and practical, because of that I am even considering building my own.
Am I being crazy?

It'd be a fun project if anything...

Maybe this link will help."I have a plan, a plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a fox." (from the Blackadder TV series)0 -
Yup, that's the site that inspired me. I have an old mountain bike with a sturdy frame back home which I can get converted.0
