Land's End to John '0' Groats cross country

Ey'up,
I'm toying with the idea of a Land's End to John 'o' Groats epic ride. Would like to do as much of it cross country as possible, avoiding tarmac where ever possible. Any one know if it's been done before, or if there are any routes already in place.
