Compatibility question

Will any 9 speed cassette be compatible with any 9 speed shifters aslong as the rear mech supports the tooth capacity?
And will any gear shifters work with a double chainring, or does the front mech you have affect this?
Now a question regarding front mech, Will any front mech designed for a double be compatible with any shifters?
Thanks,
Jordan

So long as you are not talking about using Campy with Shimano/SRAM, then the answer to is yes.0

Can you explain why you can't use Campag with Shimano/SRAM?0

The cog variables are
number of cogs
inter-cog spacing
cog-thickness.
The derailleur variable are
Actuation ratio (how much horizontal movement per unit of cable pull)
Shifter variables are
Cable-pull per click (mm)
Number of clicks
Campy, Shimano and Sram use different numbers so any compatibility is purely coincidental.
Generally you cant mix shifter, mechs and cogs from different systems.
Shimano have the same actuation ratio for all rear mechs but at the front, the ratio is different for MTB and road mechs so you cant use MTB front mechs with road shifters.0 -
The sprockets/cogs are spaced differently. Unless you are using friction only (not indexed) shifting then you will have problems engaging gears. A solution is to use different spacers between the sprockets (if you are using a Shimano cassette you will have to remove the allen screws/rivets holding the sprockets together). You can get spacer kits from Highpath Engineering (and other places) to do the job.0

Campy
Go into the corner until you learn to say it properly !0 -

Mi dispiace molto. Saying it and writing it are two different things. If I were to actually vocalise it, I would use the correct Italian palatal nasal pronunciation of "gn" (as in the Spanish "ñ") but as I am writing on an internet forum, I adopted the commonly used term 'Campy' because it saves farting about any further on the keyboard. Capito? Grazie mille.0 -
Thanks for the replies, I fully understand now0

It may help if you tell us exactly what you want to mix as you can mix items of different make. It's just a matter of making sure you get the right amount of cable of pull per click of gear change. For example campag 10 will shift shimano 8 without any mods at all, but shimano MTB will struggle with Road front mechs.0
