Was the default position in Coppi's time to ride on the drops ?

Judging from the horribly pointy lack of hoods - I'd say so.

I have that picture and he is time trialing with a single rear cog.

The Classic Fausto position was on the tops but out wide to climb mountains in the saddle.
The interesting thing is that Contadors saddle is about the same distance behind the bottom bracket.

I think back then time trial bikes were generally fixed gear.
