  • When selling cars on ebay (sold a few) i always write a receipt on the net with a description and disclaimer.

i then sign and printed at the bottom and got the buyer to do the same. I'd make a copy for both of us so they had something to take with them too.

Might mean nothing, but buyers were very happy doing it.

Indeed the old "sold as seen" is not sufficient, as if there is something wrong with the item and you know about it you have to declare it, you can't just say "well you looked at it so its your fault for not spotting it".

Receipts for second hand items they arn't much good, yes they can be an item of proof of purchase but even as proof of ownership its far too easy to just draw something up yourself if you stole it... "Yeah I bought this off a guy 600 miles away, look the receipt says so"

Obviously checks would then entail, but there are idiots out there who would do this in the hope the cops take it at face value, same as insurance documents that are actually cancelled policies.

As far as I'm aware receipts are worth doing as some sort of proof of purchase, but in terms of what you put on it, disclaimers rarely would stand up as the Sales of Goods act overules it.
