What bike?

Afternoon all,
It's my first time buying a proper bike so I would like some advice and recommendations.
I currently ride a 2002 Cinder Cone.
I live in Surrey, so there's quite a few places to ride. Most riding done off my door step in Ox Shot woods etc XC stuff... But looking to start going to Box Hill, Wisely, Ripley...
I'm looking to spend up to £2500.
Bikes I've been looking at:
Specialized Pitch Pro
Lapierre 314 Spicy
Trek EX8
Orange Five S 2011 and possibly the Fox 32 Float RL 140mm 15QR + the hope hubs upgrade if it really worth doing?
Took the Pitch out on a basic road test from Evans, so couldn't really get the feel for it, friend has 1 and he's say it's really good especially for the price.
Also took the Orange Five 2010 out to Box Hill, first time up there and I felt really confident and stable on the Five!
The Trek has knocked off the Five from what mountain and it's not even in there top 3 now if that's any think to go by, but looking at the history of the Five and with regards to maintenance and reliability it looks pretty solid, any advice recommendations please?
Any other bikes I've missed to be put in the line up?
Cheers,
JR

Also look at the Marin Mount Vision 5.8 at £2k
http://www.bikescene.co.uk/Marin-Mount- ... AAAFa9AgA=0 -
mount vision cannot be faulted for maintenance or reliability. It's essentially a maintenance free frame. In fact, they guarantee it, for life.0
-
Cheers, I'll take a look.
Lovely looking bike!
Any reviews links?
Cheers,
JR0 -
From that lot I'd personally get the Fuel. From the Spesh range the Stumpy would be a better comparison, the Pitch is a lot of bike to lug around the Surrey Hills!0
-
Have you considered a Giant Anthem X2, or a Trance if looking for something a little less XC?0
-
Orange 5 works bang on at Surrey Hills0
-
The Marin MV 5.8 is better speced than the EX8.....bike of the year two years on the bonce compared to 1 for the Trek....for me the MV for £2K wins hands down0
-
Just got back from BR live and got to try out several bikes there, without adding to your list too much, what I would say is go out and try different bikes out if you can and see what feels comfortable. My personal favourite was the commencal meta 5.5 limited which is 2.1k in evans at the moment.
What I did find is that some bikes felt right for me, others didn't, they werent necesarilly bad bikes just not right for me0 -
Cheers for the replies lads.
To be honest I'm getting a bit of a head fook trying to work which bike to go for.
I thought it was the Orange 5 that won the bike of the year the last few times!?! (Trial bike) So the Trek has taken out the Orange this year?
Did the Marin win in a different category?
Sorry I'm just getting into this over the last month or so...
The Marin is defo up there as one of the choices now, but have heard a lot of good things regarding the Orange. I've just brought MBR and they have the latest review on 2011
Five, so going to give that a read shortly.
robot-tom - not really considered the Giant, the rest I've look at seem better imo, more bikes to add to the mix!
Any got any think to say about the Orange and also how it weighs up to the Marin.
Also the Lapierre, should this be considered?
The Pitch does seem to be a bit heavier not that much around a kilo over the Orange, there's a review on this bike too in the mag...
Cheers,
J
p.s
Thanks Gaz,
I'll look at the Meta 5.5 and confuse my self further lol. I did feel comfortable on the Orange and it did have good reviews, but haven't tried the rest. Difficult with work etc at the mo.0 -
The Lappiere has a more supple back end than the Orange due to linkage that drives the shock.
The marin is in a different league entirely and is incredibly plush.
Nowt wrong with the Orange, but it certainly doesn't feel as plush on the rear end, but that can be perfect for some poeple, depends what you like.0 -
I've decided on a Orange 5 2011 + the fox fork, hope hubs, maxle swing arm, and hope pack equivalent. Total £2629.99 putting £1200 down and rest on finance. There going to take £200 off total price,
Good deal?
Cheers,

To be honest I would still have the Marin and save myself £629 in beer tokens or new kit...if your a medium then I would have this...
http://www.discountcyclesdirect.co.uk/p ... ts_id=7468
with Hope and carbon goodies, Fox fork and RP23 all for £1,800 you can have a holiday with your new bike with the change from the Orange.....no brainer0 -
Thanks for the recommendations, that's going to be quite an old bike come Autumn too no? I'm still keen on the Orange, would you say that's a good deal?
Felt pretty good on the 2010 bike. Any 1, deal or no deal lol?0 -
Old(er) but still great.
As for orange being a good deal? Personally I wouldn't even entertain the thought of paying that much money for one.0 -
Neither would I, just too steep for the level of kit and overall weight.0
-
MBR rated the zesty 514(the slighty better version of the 314) and the orange 5 pro (the slighty better version of the 5s) as there trail bike of the yearmongoose amasa elite 08
giant anthem x4 100 -
I know, the price is a little to much if I'm completely honest.
But I think it's a brilliant frame/bike!
First time ever at box hill on some fast trails on the five and felt really good on the bike, although doesn't mean I wouldn't feel good on the others mentioned.
2011 five has all the bits to keep it up to date, like tapered forks, ISCG mounts, dropper seat post..
Will the extra weight really be a problem? Don't mind as it will get me fitter and build up my chicken legs no? Lol
So it's won the trails bike of the year joint place with the Zesty?
Cheers,
J0 -
Not in WMB lol. The Trek EX8 is bike of the year.
If you have stested the 5 and like it, then go for it. But I would test others as I do think there are lighter, better performing, and btter value bikes out there.0 -
Can any 1 let me know if the deal I've got with regards to the discount etc is any good and what discounts are peeps getting on the new 5s and pro If at all?
Cheers,
J0 -
MBR pretty much have a sex wee over any Orange 5. They're almost certain to vote it bike of the year regardless of competition - they seem a little fanboyish.
And to be brutally honest, that's much the case with the 5. It's by no means a bad bike (overpriced though) but there's a legion of adoring fans who will not hear a bad word said about it.0 -
Ok so if the Orange was around the same price as the other recomended bikes, would it be the bike to go for?
Confused.com!
Just had finance confirmed and getting a call today for deposit!
If I do go for it, what colour: Crome grey, plasma blue, or cloud White?
Peace0
