chain jumping under power

hi all,

I did some service work on my bike as my old casset and chain were very badley worn. over 2000miles without being looked after. anyway I got around to sorting this mess out, but the new stuff jumps when I lay down power. if I ride gently its fine, but if I'm pulling away or going up a hill its aweful. Also there is some friction still in the system as the chainset is pulled around when the bike is freewheeling.

I have now replaced the rear derailure and serived the hub. well I serived what I could, but no matter what I tried i was unable to remove the hub to regrease that part, and I've found an amount of swarf in the old greese around the barings, and some damage to one of the cones. I'm going to get a new cone, and new barings to put in.

anyone recognise this problem, maybe point me in the direction of what the cause might be.

you need to see where the chain is jumping.

    Also what did you replace?

it could be jumping on the chain rings or the freebody could be slipping.

    the body is not serviceable.

Sounds like your bearings are toast.

Happened to me, just replace them so long as the races are not damaged.

    What hub is it BTW
  • hi,

the bike is a Specilized Hard Rock Pro 2008, the spec lists the wheels as specilized, but I dont' think they 'make' wheels so I've no idea what they are? I have been unable to remove the hub, but the bike store today said I need a 12m Allen key, so thats the next step. Also I think there is slight latteral movement in the casset when its fixed on, this could point to warn hub barings maybe? and I was thinking if that movement caused it to twist slightly as I put power in, maybe this is causing enough movement to cause a derail between cogs? sound likely? if so I may just order up a new wheel? rather then try and fix the freehub barings?

So far I have replaced the Cassette, the Derailure, and the Chain. it all runs sweet, no noise, no missed gears etc.. just this power jump business, oh and the excess friction.
got told today that its unlikely I'll be able to buy replacement 'cones'? normal? I thought these would be standard spares?

Of course you can replace the cones.

I just did it on my Deore hub as they were destroyed along with the bearings

Try replacing your chainring aswell, sounds like that is the most likely thing for skipping
  • Chainring? the big cogs up front. theres no slippage there. Will be replacing it soon but its not the cause of this whohar.

I spend a lot of my riding time, staring down at the cogness and its goings on, its a suprise I've not been run over by a bus, or actually run over a bus by now!

It does sound like it is.

If your last chain was worn, the rings will have worn to that chain and the new chain will be slipping on it. Thats why you should replace your cassette with a chain, its just the chain rings are stronger but it still happens
