Which road bike??

I have a budget of £550, ideally less if possible for a decent entry-level road bike.
I've shortlisted the Specialized Secteur base model, with Shimano 2300s and an aluminium fork. Would that make much of a differance over a carbon fork?
Also considering the Specialized Allez 24 - similar to the above but with a carbon fork. Supposedly the Secteur is better for longer distance stuff, which I occasionally do. Would I be able to stick pannier rack to the Allez or would I not, for some reason?
Anything like the above, needs to be a triple chainset as I need the versatility!
Any ideas/opinions/experiences of anything?
Cheers!

have you concidered the Giant Defy 3 or 3.5?
when i asked about it, all i heard were good reviews
gives a good ride, and has a carbon fork, and has a tripple if needed.
sorry i cant give a more advanced review, as it is my first road bike, and i am only young!

I have the Defy 3 £600 The 3.5 is within your budget. Tried all sorts within the price range but for me, Giants Defy was the winner by far0

I pick up my Allez (16) later today so will sound a bit biased I guess but I did compare the Secteur also as one of my friends has an Elite version.
The Secteur was slightly heavier and a tad more comfort aimed thanks to sllightly wider tyres, gel tape, etc. Also the headtube is, iirc, 10mm taller, etc.
The Secteur does have a carbon fork though, click for spec here:

Evans have the Scott Speedster S50 reduced to £525 at the moment. That ticks all your boxes.
Or get on ebay; there are some bargains to be had!0 -

I just picked up an Allez and I was surprised to find that it appears to have fixings on the frame for a pannier rack.0
