Seat post issues

Hello
I have had my Specialized Epic FSR Comp for about 3 months now and love the bike but the seat post clap doesn’t seem to be able to keep my seat post at the same height for an entire ride. I’m 13 stone so I’m not light but not supper heavy either, I’ve progressively been tightening it up more and more and on the most recent tighten I realized that part of the clamp where the lever ramps against the clamp is starting to shear off under the load, has anyone ever heard of this before. I didn’t think I’d done it up that tight. Would this be covered under a warranty and if not, any advice on new seat post clamps? I’m quite drawn to the new crank Bros ones but for no other reason than they look really cool.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had this happen with the original seat clamp that came with my bike. It somewhat appeared to be made of cheese and it no time atall failed on me during a ride!

I now use a Hope QR seat clamp - never had any issues with it in the last year.

QR seat clamps are generally a bit lame, get an allen bolt one!

Just tighten the bolt..and see if that helps....(undo QR, give it a couple of turns, it should now be super tight and grip your tube)

    From the first post:
I’ve progressively been tightening it up more and more

Helps to read more than the thread title! ;-)

njee is probably right you know, if you are wanting to keep your saddle at the same height all ride and have no need to lower it for descents at all, go for the allen bolt option.

you want a QR clamp that actually works and so few do a proper job i've found, it's problematic if you want QR. In fact the only one i've found that does the job it's supposed to is the Ragley QR clamp, for the price it's a god send. I need a spare so i'll try the Hope one as as they come in tart colours. 'hopefully' that'll match the Ragley.
  • Thanks guys, I had an alen bolt one on my last bike and never had these issues, I think I'll probably just go back to that. The guys at my bike shop did a great job of setting the bike up for me, they took a bunch of measurements and had me on a trainer and all sorts and they really seemed to find the sweet spot for sadle height and stem length so I very rarely move the seat during a ride. I might as well just crank it up with a bolt.

    Thanks again.

I have been having the same problem with my stumpjumper as did my mate.
Im going to get a hope clamp as i have had a couple and they seem very good.

My mate however changed just the bolt and that seemed to help. :D

Alternatively you could try applying some carbon assembly paste to the seatpost where the clamp is.

    Just to reinforce some of what's already been said;

My Specialized QR didn't hold my seatpost in place from day 1. To compensate, I overtightened it and managed to strip the thread.

I bought a Hope QR and have had no problems since. Well worth spending the money
