    True!

The heavier it is, the more manly you have to be to ride it

Anyone can pedal a super-efficient 12lb hardtail uphill quickly. Lets see you do the same on a 45lb DH bike!

Yeah i think they were, would love it for cruising about on! Did you see it had a cog on the front hub too? We were trying to work out how you'd steer if it had a chain on.

I might be wrong, but if it's the kind of bike I'm thinking of, the idea is that you can carry a single spare wheel for extreme expeditions, and it will fit either front or rear.

Similar to this, but with a different front hub with the extra cog :

yeah, that sounds about right then. I think they're used in IditaBike or cross desert challenges and the like, where carrying a spare wheel is common.
  • I don't think a 12lb bike would last 15 mins with me...

It's ok sheeps, that thing is meant for going over snowfields/glaciers or deserts. In this case it really is the right tool for the job.

Unless I'm mistaken, it has a sprocket on the front too....

    Look closely.

And I'd *guess* it's because to get a super-wide rim, big enough to fit a super wide tyre, and STILL have some sort of decent lateral strength, they'd just use a REAR hub, for it's wider flanges.

So you might as well put another sprocket on the front, so you have a different gear ratio. With a chain tensioner, and some extra slack in the chain, it makes sense.

But that's assuming it's a single speed build.
