What fork for under £200 to replace Suntour Epicon

The Suntour Epicon 100mm forks on my halfords voodoo have died for the 3rd time :(

Hoping they will replace with a new equivalent priced fork this time. Preferably not air since I’ve had enough of it leaking on me and I guess a really good reliable air fork would cost a lot more.

Would like to get a bit clued up on what the options are so I don’t get ripped of by the mechanic when I call them on Monday. Last time he offered me a second hand Suntour XCR which I turned down, before sending the epicon for a 4 week repair.

What I know so far:
Suntour Epicon £170 - £200 (keeps leaking air)
Suntour XCR £100 (okish, is this the best suntour coil?)
Rock Shox Dart 3 £150 (??)
Rock Shox Tora £200 (think this is my prefered option)

Halfords mostly stock Rock Shox parts and the current fork is Suntour so I guess they are the only makes to choose from.

I would go for the Tora...the SL is available here for £130...you can get the Uturn with poploc for £200....

Get them to replace the whole fork with a new Epicon? Sounds like it has a manufacturing fault. It is the best fork out of all those you have listed except the top end Toras.

After three fails of the same unit, you have a good claim for a replacement.
  • I've got an Epicon on my bike - it's been bombproof. Sounds like you got a bad 'un?

I had an epicon and just didn't like it, got a tora 318 coil uturn and it is much better. Though tbh I think just a better air fork would be alright as he ramp up on epicons just isn't nice and the damping is imo clumsy. At the moment I would look at 1020 Marzocchi 44 RLO for a £200 100mm fork.

    Giant STP0

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

I've been looking at the Toras myself after failing to find a set of disc only 120mm RockShox Recon solo air forks to replace my knackered Rebas. They are just not available without nasty old v-brake mounts! There seems little else in the price bracket in standard QR, 120mm, disc only. The Toras look like a good candidate for the price (I can't afford another set of Rebas). Only downside is the weight penalty.

Another option is the Recon U-turn forks although you can only get these in a coil spring version. A bit over your £200 budget but by all acounts it looks to be a very good fork & not to heavy considering it's coil sprung.

Toras are available without V brake mounts, and you can remove them anyway.
