Rode my first 100 miler today! Many thanks to my mate Frank the Tank for getting me into cycling this year. I've ridden 2000 miles, including a tour of Wales and lost a stone in weight in the process.

I'm 55 and feel like I'm getting back to the weight and fitness I had 10-15 years ago. Unfortunately Frank is now a stone heavier and much slower than he was before he started dragging me along

FCN 8 off road because I'm too old to go racing around.

Congratulations, much admiration. I hope to to do my first 100 miller this year, so far I've done 70 miles on three occasions. Just need the extra push.

i did my first 100 miler today too - I did the long route on the BikeRadar Sportive. Very hard work in the 30C and 97% humidity, but it was a thrill going round Brands Hatch and then 105 miles through lovely Kent. Only averaged 15.7 mph, but as I realised I wouldn't hit my target time, I took it easy to make sure I got to the end.

If you need something to make you do 100 miles, I suggest you sign up for a Sportive.

It wasn't that fast - 6:41, but Frank was holding me back  If he comes on here claiming I was drafting him take no notice :D

My fitness (fatness) is not what it was but I dragged that "sandbagger" RM around for 90mile. I was covered in salt, snot, sweat and flies, he looked like he'd just fell out of Evans's shop window.

While we were round at mine enjoying post ride muffins and coffee (kindly served by Mrs Tank) the "good lady" observed the difference in our appearance and questioned if we'd actually been on the same ride.

Seriously though,WELL DONE MATE, "secret training" pays dividends.

Well done - I did the 70 at about the same avg speed - couldn't have gone much further! Agree about the lap of Brands, it was amazing, and also the heat - a killer!

Congratulations. I only get out at weekends and have only managed to do a 50 miler so far. I needed painkillers to sleep that night, so I best get a box of them for the day I manage a 100.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • i am new to the bike scene, been at it for just under a year. I did my first 50 miler on the 4th for the BHF, looking at doing the 60 at Blenheim Palace in October, then i will push on to do my first 100.

The Blenheim event is so good that you'd be better off targetting that as a 100. Also worth bearing in mind that 100 isn't that much more difficult than 60; when you finish the Blenheim 60 you'll be full of regret that you didn't do the extra loop to hit the 100 on the event. Don't miss out.

And October is a long way off; you've got plenty of time to be in a position to do a 100 by then.

    Well done

I can't stress how impressed I am, I have managed to get upto 35 and it now feels feeble in comparison

Thanks DC. This has been a good year for me to start cycling seriously: I've got plenty of spare time, the weather's been excellent and my friend Frank has been an excellent mentor.

It's surprising how quickly you can increase mileage if you just keep getting out riding. I've only been riding 35+ miles since May but have had the time to put the miles in.

All the best, keep pedalling :D

OH! I feel really humble now RM, the partnership has been one which has been beneficial to us both.

Anyway I'm off to do some secret training now.

That's 35 miles more exercise than most people do! 8)

You'll work your way up to a bigger mileage, no doubt there.

Give yourself a target for this year, maybe 60?

Aim for a 100 next year?

    Its supposed to be fun!

It took me three years to get to worked up to a century, now I want to do it again.

100 is a real milestone, fantastic
